Meeting Details

The PJ Safer Street Design & 15 Minute City Concept Meeting was organized by Bike Commute Malaysia and Say No to PJD Link. It was attended by Petaling MP Lee Chian Chung & Bandar Utama ADUN Jamaliah Jamaludin. The purpose of the meeting was to share how Petaling Jaya streets can be cohesively be redesigned to be safer and reduce deaths on roads. At the same time, the redesign of streets can also address first & last mile connectivity issues and provide inclusive accessibility that could better accommodate other mobility modes such as micro mobility, active mobility and even OKU users.

Current street design in Klang Valley is highly car centric where majority of space on our streets are designed for cars, making it difficult and unattractive for micro mobility & active mobility users.

During the meeting, several examples of site-specific interventions & practical street reimagining’s was presented to inspire attendees on how some streets could be different. New street designs included a more cohesive connection for pedestrians and cyclist to transit stations, schools and other essential services within a 15minute radius, while way finding strategies are important as well. Safer Street designs & the 15minute city concept can also address other issues in the long term, including our dependency on cars, high emissions from private vehicles and its effect on the climate, congestion, traffic safety and our ageing society.

Lee Chian Chung had also attended an hour bicycle ride with the organizers to get a feel on the feasibility of cycling within 15minutes of the train station. With proper way finding, we made use of shortcuts, low traffic streets in housing areas, minimizing encounters with hilly streets and maximizing the feeling comfortable on a ride. This is to mimic an ideal experience if one were to cycle daily to a train station. However we still do encounter a few tricky highway intersection & obstacles. The ride started at Taman Bahagia LRT Station to TTDI MRT Station, covering areas such as, SS2, Damansara Jaya & Damansara Kim.
